ISO 45001

What is an ISO?

First, we need to address the basics. What is an ISO?

ISO stands for the International Organisation for Standardisation. Essentially this is the organisation, founded in London but now based in Switzerland, which develops and publishes a range of international standards across numerous sectors.

This facilitates businesses and organisations around the world operating to the same technical, industrial, and commercial standards.

What is the ISO 45001 Standard Certification?

The ISO 45001 is the International Standard for Health and Safety at work.

As ISO themselves note, every year thousands of lives are lost due to work accidents or fatal diseases linked to work activities. Their aim, and the aim of those who successfully implement ISO 45001 is to eradicate as many of these accidents and examples of poor practice as possible.

The ISO 45001 has been designed to create a safe place of work by tackling safety issues throughout the supply chain.

Overall, it should help improve work safety, improve employee morale and working conditions, reduce insurance costs, and potentially increase performance in a more organised and regulated environment.

What are the Key Elements of ISO 45001?

This standard for Occupational Health and Safety focuses on providing a safe and healthy workplace for both employees and visitors.

The focus for the ISO is to help eliminate and control the possible factors which could potentially lead to illness, injury, death, and other mitigating issues.

Some of the key elements of ISO 45001 include:

  • Organisational context
  • Management roles
  • Effective planning
  • Resource and support
  • Performance evaluation
  • Improvement
  • Operation

ISO 45001 is process-based, dynamic in all clauses, considers both risk and opportunities and includes the view of all interested parties.

From the elements listed above, ISO 45001 is designed to take a top-down approach right through the organisation, from context setting and leadership right through to ongoing performance evaluation and the facilitation of improvement.
